The Fitbit Ace LTE is a smartwatch developed by Google for kids aged 7 to 14, combining communication, fitness tracking, and location sharing with a suite of games designed to motivate movement. Each game is custom-built for the device, unlocking progress based on daily activity and movement goals to deliver fun, engaging gameplay.
As UI Lead on the Fitbit Ace LTE team at Mighty Kingdom, I designed the interfaces for three original games: Sproutlings, a virtual pet simulator; Spirit Garden, an immersive mindfulness merge game; and Jelly Jam, a movement-based dance contest. The UI was crafted to be playful and accessible, always reinforcing movement and physical activity as the core goal.
As these were among the first games developed for the device, effectively communicating the user experience to Google was essential. The 40mm display posed unique challenges in maintaining a fun, intuitive UI while clearly conveying instructions and progress. To bridge this, I built fully interactive Figma prototypes for each game, enabling close collaboration between Mighty Kingdom and Google across both visual design and player interaction.
Balancing playfulness with clarity was key. I developed a distinct UI style for each game to complement its individual art direction, while ensuring consistency with Wear OS design patterns and intuitive usability. Our team was the first to receive final approval for a game in the Fitbit Arcade, and the UI and player experience we delivered helped set the standard for future titles on the platform.
