Trails SA

We were approached by the South Australian Office for Recreation, Sport and Racing to utilise their rich data sets of recreational trails to encourage South Australians to get out and discover our state. As the lead designer, I collaborated closely with the development team to create a visually appealing, easily accessible library of trails that the user could filter by area or activity type.

Given the vast number of trails, we set about developing flexible page templates that are dynamically populated by the data sets available. Each individual trail page beautifully delivers key pieces of information such as trail length, difficulty, elevation and more, along with an interactive map and links to accomodation.

Keeping the interface clear and concise was key, but I also needed to showcase the natural beauty of our state. Using a cornflower blue to contrast with the rich ochre tones of the outback, I developed a simple but effective logo and brand style based on pops of accent colour, background elements which nod to the landscape, and a carefully crafted custom set of icons to clearly communicate key pieces of information. Subtle micro-interactions aim to delight and entice the user to explore further.

The website was launched in March 2017 and now showcases over 600 trail experiences across our beautiful state.
